My "C" has the void as well; and, in agreement with John Lazenby, you
could NOT open the hood if present.

Our 300C, 3N572973 was built in June or July which is about 66% through
the
production run if I did my math correct. The grill has the missing
piece as you
describe, but I have no way of knowing if the grill is original to the
car. I
also have a spare grill that I'll look at later today.
I've always thought that this was "factory correct" and the question I
would
pose if there is a fixed upright in that position how does one release
the hood?
Once again it just shows how much we really don't know about the mark.
