George, I believe that guidance you heard referred to the very old radios, 
not forties or fifties stuff.  I think if you take an ohmmeter and measure 
the resistance of the originals, they're going to be between 4 and 8 ohms 
(my '47 Hudson original radio had an 8 ohm speaker).  Find some 6-8 ohm 
modern ones that fit, and you'll be fine.
