You've got to be the coolest mom I know! 

I'm not a wagon expert, but here's my 2 cents worth.

1) Broken counterbalance spring in hinge assembly. I suggest the panel be removed and the hinge inspected.

2) Third seat conversions are tough to get parts for, plus the seat fabric should match. Maybe a parts car? Do some websurfing for a wagon in a wrecking yard.
