413 Journal Problem?

Hello Group,

A friend is about to close up his 413 and noticed the rear journal 
looks strange like it has been machined away. Take a look and tell me 
what you think. He claims the engine has never been opened until it's 
present rebuild. The pictures are at:

The back side of the journal is only 1/8" thick at the top. The other 
journals fine. Is this a 413 thing as the 440 and 383 cranks that I have 
seen are much thicker than this.
