Re: [Chrysler300] Subject: Shop Loft

Hi Group,

This was previously sent out on another mail list and I got one good answer
back, however I would like to hear any other opinions before I commit to a
final design. Can anyone offer any educated advice for this project?

Angle shapes are used as compression members but in your application would
not be advisable. An 8' piece of 3" std wt pipe will, as a better
compression/column element, be capable of simply supporting something north
of 30,000 lbs. Square tubing may or may not offer some benefits construction
wise and a 3" sq tube 8' long and a wall thickness of 3/16" will also
support 30K lbs and upwards.

The 3'' angles you mentioned used as perimeter members will offer the
challenge of controlling the span to keep deflection to a decent level and I
think you mentioned controlling twist with a lot of bolts which could be
major construction effort but something of the kind will definately be
necessary. Would need more information before an allowable span for the 3''
angles and the flooring could be calculated but I my opinion is that both
dimensions will need to be broken up with supports so that something other
than air can be stored on the deck :o).

HTH (hope this helps)
