Hi Rob,

Those rear drums can be pesky to remove.   No, the key cannot be removed
first.

I assume you are using an old, three-arm style puller to remove the drums?
You did not say anything about HOW you are trying to get them off.

You most definitely need a drum puller. The best design (way better than the
old-style three-arm puller) is Les Fairbank's puller -   please see ad #8 on
the Club's "parts for sale" page located at:

  Having a real bad time removing the drums on my 64 K conv. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. I've tried pullers, hammers, etc.
  The service manual says to remove the "key" which I can see, but there is
no way to get a hold of it.  Let me know,.
