Brake fluid, traditional and synthetic, but not silicone fluid, is water soluble as well as hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture/water, which is why wheel cylinders, masters, slaves, and calipers rust, with every movement of a piston, a slight, slight film of fluid is deposited as the rubber seals or cups move, that thin film absorbs moisture and rusts, with constant use its minimally problematic, but in low use vehicles, the onset is more noticeable...

Thanks Jim. Never knew brake fluid was water soluble.

carpet
Water, that's all he needs, soak the carpet and padding in the
tub an hour, ring it out, repeat another 2 times or so... As soon as the
"soapy" appearance us gone when he wrings out the carpet, its clean. This
happens on almost every brand of car where the bore of the master is open to
the passenger area, I.e. no booster on the firewall... Has nothing to do with
bore size being wrong, pertains to rusting or pitting of the bore, a damaged
rear seal, or corrosion on the aluminium piston. I saved 5 or more carpets
with the process regardless of whether anyone disagrees. DOT 3 is water
soluble. Early carpets may discolor from the fluid, modern nylon or rayon
carpets survive.

Hmmm...don't even know how that could happen, unless the piston inside
the bore was undersize (designed for m/c with 1" bore instead of 1 1/8"
?).
Methinks he's done for. Needs to bite the bullet and buy a new
carpet.

A friend recently discovered the master cylinder on his 57 DeSoto has
been leaking inside and down the firewall. Apparently it has been going on
for some time and the Goer's replacement carpet uses foam rather than
jute. Any advice as to how he might save the carpet, get the smell out
and actually remove the Dot 3 from the foam. He will remove it and can
soak it in a cleaning solution but he is not sure what is best to use.
Thanks
Marv
