Ed,I had that exact same problem once in my 64 Dodge driver years ago. The colder it got the longer it stayed stuck in first. Once it shifted, it was fine afterwards until it cooled off again. I assumed it was caused by varnish in the valve body sticking a check ball. It went away forever immediately with a fliud change.
