Here's a fun read from "Route 66 Remembered:"
Says they were originally intended for cooling drinking water
but also served as radiator cooling and spare water for boilovers.
Remember, carts didn't have pressure caps until the early 1950's.

see near as many canvas bags on the front of cars in the desert in 1957
after pressurized systems and Prestone anti-freeze.
I think you were supposed to use them to cool drinking water.
You're right, though, they were really common.
