The 'hose' clamp that I referenced is actually the one that comes with
the boot/U-joint overhaul kit, so its
width/type is not an issue; I did not measure its width, but it is about
1/2" wide (let's say).
The split boot system, is both a lot cheaper (at $21.99) , and easier (being in 2-pieces which can be installed by wrapping the halves around a still-installed driveline, instead of dropping the driveline and having to make the OEM-type 1-piece boot softened-enough so as to be barely-able to force it over the trunion joint cover or, to press out the trunion-pin and to disassemble the entire trunion assembly, which will allow the removal of the trunion-cover, and a simple installation OF that OEM-type boot cover. Well, the newest development, today, is that the shop easily removed the trunion pin, from the trunion shaft (I had been led to believe, years ago, that that pin removal was a big deal, involving a heavy-duty press; the shop advises that they merely punched-out that pin.I already have all the miscellaneous pieces for a trunion overhaul, from having previously bought a complete O/H kit (but had only used the boot, from it).So, now, the shop is searching for a 1-piece CV joint boot, as it is more practical than the 2-piece guy. Also, the driveline spins at a rate of about 3-times faster than that of a CV joint's axle shaft, because the drive line has yet to reach the rear differential, so, the service lifetime of a glued-together split boot is somewhat problematic. I will check, too, on the 'pay, to see if a rubber boot is available, but someone, here, has offered me the sale of their OEM-boot (iirc). The trannie shop will be installing the O/H'ed trannie today (after having had the car since Feb); the boot-deal is apparently the last protocol in this project; I can wait another week (finally) to find out how the trannie might actually operate. Also they crimp on like the original.I'm not getting why a cobbled up replacement is going to be better. Getting replacements off the shelf at the local NAPA would be great.Roger van HoySent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: eastern sierra Adj Services <esierraadj@xxxxxxxxx>Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 09:16:35 To: <L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>Subject: Re: [FWDLK] Need to borrow someone's spare driveline rubber "dust shield" The (hose) clamps are the correct 1/4", and are the ones supplied with the boot/trunion overhaul kit. The boots very reliably self destruct, at least, on any car that gets to be driven regularly. Today, my parts shop is supposed to receive a couple CV joint boots, one of which is hoped to be able to fit over both connection ends. If this deal works out, I'll provide some pics and info on the I.D. of the subject boot.
