My recollection is that you tune the radio to around 1400 khz and adjust the antenna trimmer for either maximum noise (if no station on that frequency) or maximum signal strength if a station is present there.   Fern

The proper method, (I was always told) is to tune in the WEAKEST station.  We went so far as to pull the car under an overpass, so the signal would be weakest.
 
The manual might describe this method.
