Which way did you hand-crank the engine? Cranking it without starting
could have left the starter drive in the extended position, not a problem
since when it does fire it will disengage the starter drive in normal
fashion. If you turned the engine backwards it would naturally stay
engaged, turning it in the direction it normally runs should retract the
starter bendix, could be it needs that extra kick from the engine firing
to supply enough inertia to get the job done. If it cranks without making
strange noises it's most likely installed correctly, just be ready to
shut the key off within a few seconds if it appears to hang up.

Hello Members
Question on our starter motors--it should not make a difference what
engine or year.
I cranked the new engine over a few times (without starting) to get oil
pressure up and just examine other things.
NO PROBLEMO!!
When I went to turn the engine by hand to pre set the timing and
stuff,,,,I heard the starter 'racheting' because it is still engaged with
the ring gear.
Any reason why it has NOT released its grasp?????
Anyone know how that DISENGAGEMENT is supposed to happen??
Can it stay engaged after the engine starts??? That seems like that
could be a mess.!!
Thanks to all
