Re: [FWDLK] Fan Belt tension

Hi Greg,

A tension gauge and the FSM is the way to go.  Having said that, I was taught and have always used about 1/2" deflection on a V-belt.  A firm push with the finger or thumb will show the deflection, if you think you might hurt your digit to get the 1/2", that is too tight.  :-)  A generator with bushings will be more susceptible to damage from a tight belt than would an alternator with roller bearings. The water pump is also susceptible.  Better to err on the side of looseness than the other way.  If the belt is not squealing, and if inspection doesn't show glazing on the belt or pulley after some running, you are probably right in the ball park.

Gang,

I just replace the fan belt on my 56 Dodge.   How tight should I tension this belt?   I just pulled the generator back as far as I could and tightened the bolts.   Should I use a lever bar to get more tension or is it good to go?
