Greg,
One should always consult the “Service Manual”. The belt tension process
is found on page 138 of the 56 Dodge manual, in the cooling section. Since few
of us have service tool C-3379 for use with a torque wrench, you will have to
guess.
If the belt is too tight, you will wear out the generator and water pump
bearings. If it is too loose, the belt will squeal. I generally pull on the generator
by hand with about 20 lbs of force as I tighten the bolts, adjusting arm first.
Re-tighten a new belt after a couple of hundred miles, as it will stretch.

Gang,
I just replace the fan
belt on my 56 Dodge. How tight should I tension this belt?
I just pulled the generator back as far as I could and tightened
the bolts. Should I use a lever bar to get more tension or is it
good to go?
