Mike, Sounds like a good very accurate method to me. Originally, I thought the suggestion was to use the indicator to indicate at TDC, like the straw, not 0.5 below. In between the marks is ,of course, top dead center. I won't use a piston stop in an installed car engine, it's too easy for someone to come along and hit the starter when your back is turned, with possible disastrous results.
