Ford has had its moments, for sure. After working on Fords from 53 to 59 for a number of years, I would just about write them off as underpowered, poor handling, and the worst braking cars I ever encountered. A 59 352 4bbl 500 comes to mind. Nice original car, I wrenched on it for a whole weekend trying to tune it right and get the brakes to stop it reasonably. I finally threw up my hands and called an all-Ford friend to come give it a test drive and tell me what I was doing wrong. When he returned with the car, he was all excited and wanted me to do all his cars! I was not amused. By comparison to my DeSotos, this "interceptor" car was only capable of catching dog walkers and tricycle riders!
But by 63, it looks as though Ford figured out it didn't cost that much more to make a better product and put some cajones under that sheetmetal ! I missed a 61 406 Tri-power 4-speed car one time and have always wondered when Ford made the performance turn. 63 - 65 - 66 were benchmark body designs for the common Ford, ... darn good looking even in low model trim. That 7 liter is stunning. What Ford did with that line for 67 is exemplary of how they liked to take a good idea and make it fat and bloated. By 69, a Galaxie had all the good looks of a cucumber, compared to the lean and muscular design of 66.
Nice car, Lou. After that string of 50's Ford duds, I finally talked the ex into getting a 66 Galaxie ragtop with a 390 and a 4-speed. Light blue metallic with blue interior and white top. It went like a hurricane and stopped as good as anything on the road. I know exactly why you like them !
