My friend Charlie (former owner and builder of my '58 Fury) started drag
racing in the 50's. At one time he ran a '46 Ford with a 318 Fury engine and
then upgraded that to a 413. In '66 he had no special car and was looking for
something to buy and run, preferably cheap with dual quads. He found an ad for a
'58 Fury with a 350 and bought the car for $150. After a gear change and as I
call it,a"Charlie tune",the car ran a best of 14.7 in the 1/4 and set a national
record in it's class at National Speedway. I think a well tuned, low geared '58
350 Fury would run much quicker than a stock '56 D500 which leads me to
believe that to run even low 15's in a '56 Dodge it would have to have some
modifications. A stock 318 Fury ran a 16.2 1/4,that's a little more realistic
for a heavy small cubic inch car. Remember too that the tires and tracks in 1956
sucked,by 1966 when Charlie ran his Fury they had both improved greatly. As for
Ron's input on the subject, I agree, everyone had to be cheating to run the times
that these cars ran back then. Look at the actual drive reports on these cars
when new,they were slugs.
