Number on cowl is a body/style number; Serial Number ("VIN") is a stainless
tag on the left door hinge post that's very prone to falling off. Serial
will tell you where it was built, which series, and if the motor is V8 or
six. My book actually gives a list of plant codes, then says the plant
codes don't appear in the serial number, so maybe it doesn't tell you where
it was built.
The first four characters are in this format: P30-1 where the second/third
characters translate to 30 = six, 31= V8; and the fourth translates as 1=
Plaza, 2=Savoy, 3=Belvedere/Fury. Having a '57 tag floating around I don't
remember a dash to it.
P314 = should not exist according to the Krause book, unless it's off the
cowl tag I suppose.
a VIN really did not appear until 1968 when the 11-character ID numbers were
made standard for all makes.

Hello all.
On a 57 Plymouth,
What are all the different numbers and placement on that car?
Not looking to decode just wanting to know correct placement and what =
each may tell me ect.
Vin number would look like and be where on the car?
Body number and where on the car?
What is the tag on the drivers door jam?
What is the tag over the MC on the firewall?
If a P31489132 is a what kind of number and where would that be found?
thanks as always
