Thomas Jay McCahill III (born 1907) died May 10, 1975. His stepson, Brooks Bender, was his assisant during the last years of his life. By the late 1960's Uncle Tom was slowing down. He no longer went on cross-country trips and stayed pretty much in Florida. His car tests generally showed him either seated in the driver's seat or standing by the car. No more shots of him admiring some styling aspect, or questioning the purpose of its existence. Brooks became his photographer, trunk tester (he was about 6'4" and was used to show how much room a trunk had (or not) and chauffeur. After he died Brook Bender continued the road tests and the letter column, but you could tell it was not the Uncle Tom of the old days. No more prose or wise cracks. And the road tests generally were about one page, two at tops (half or less than before), with a few photos of the car's exterior and interior. That lasted a couple of years untl it became common knowledge Uncle Tom was no more.
