Ya got me confused. If rust forms a surface barrier and stops, how do
floors, fenders and doors rust away. All we should have to fix on our
old cars is a little surface rust.
Rust is not a living organism, it is a fire. A very slow one, but a
fire none the less. And left alone, it will continue to burn. The
chemical reaction is Oxidation, which is what the fire in your
fireplace is, just slower. As long as the oxygen and metal are there,
it continues. And gets worse. There are steels that have treatments or
alloys in them that are supposed to rust and form a skin (modern
bridges), scratch it and it re-skins. But cars ain't thataway.
And yes, it is encapsulated, inside all the panels, water has laid for years. Now, out in the fresh air, with oxygen present, the rust will continue. Look at the Titanic. Very little Oxygen down there if any, but she has very few years left before she will be little more than a stain on the bottom. They say she will be gone in our lifetime. I was hoping someone would post this, as there are way too many misconceptions floating around out there about the car, including the idea that somehow the Miss B. will turn to powder unless something is done immediately. No basis in fact. Ron Take whatever position, and argue-support your convictions, all you want, but PLEASE don't argue that the car "will continue" to rust, if its not some-how "de-rusted" (by Ultra One, or anyone else). Rust is NOT a living organism, such as is a tumorous malignancy. Rust is a chemical reaction, involving ferrous metal, and oxygen, and some extent of humidity and maybe some alkaline agent. Surface rust actually forms its own protective barrier, against further corrosion. Given that the car is virtually encapsulated by cosmoline and corrosion, and I don't know what-else, I can not imagine how it would deteriorate (fall-apart, though: YEAH!) any further, unless it would be dipped in the ocean. IRONICALLY, Ultra-One plans to strip the car to BARE METAL! So: sure, go argue that the highest public-good is served by removing all the patina and corrosion from the car , so that we can see what a de-rusted car lookslike [ gee; I've never seen one of them, before! ] , but, please, don'targue that "they are SAVING" the car from continuing to rust-away !
