for all practical purposes, it doesn't matter if Tulsa made money or
not, I have not seen a post from anyone who was sorry they went. For
the group it was a "Meet and Greet"
As to the money end, didn't you see the size of the Crane and all the
guys in Crane Co uniforms? I can promise you it wasn't cheap. Plus all
the other things which were used in the event. It looked like a well
done show to me, even spread out over 2-3 days.
I doubt that they paid Coddington to come, he was there for the "Face"
time on TV. Not to mention a big rub on his ego if he just
"Got-r-runin'".

In regards to the Tulsarama event itself, apparently I missed the part
where it became a bad thing to make money. Like Dave said, this has
been a PR event from the beginning...even way back in 1957, that is all
it was (back then they probably never thought the car they buried would
be worth more than the sticker price (which I guess is debatable right
now) or that people would come from all over the world to see the old
car).
Looking at it from another aspect, maybe it would have seemed less like
a money-making scheme if all these crazy car nuts had just left it all
alone and not bothered to show up to the event. That way Tulsa
wouldn't have been tempted to exploit all the tourists and make a
buck. Honestly, I can't say I've ever been to a car show or really any
other public event for that matter where money was not at least part of
the driving force behind it (every event will have costs to
offset...even if it is a charity car show and the money is going to a
"good cause").
If it was me, I wouldn't want to throw an event where I stand to lose
money either...and you can bet the Coddington clan doesn't work for
free.
