Re: [FWDLK] axle shaft and drum needed

Hi Frank,

John Hertog in Sag Harbor NY.  I'd offer to go dig for your parts in my stuff but I am leaving tomorrow for a week and you probably will find what you need faster from someone else.  If you don't give me a holler back in a week (back next sunday).  One thing I do want to point out is that 59's and also other Mopars of that vintage used a different length axle shaft depending on whether an open rear or a Sure-Grip rear so make sure you specify which you need and make sure you get the right one.  The difference is tiny (as far as length) but enough to really screw things up when you try to put it back together.  Look at the parts book and you will see there are two different part numbers for the axles, depending on whether Sure-Grip or not!   just want to save you a headache

Also - as far as pulling rear drums:  get yourself a puller made by Les Fairbanks and you'll be able to get any drum off without damage.  It's a totally different design than the old three-arm puller, works on all 5 lugs.  See ad and pictures at :   http://www.chrysler300club.com/rcmstuff/partsforsale.html

Subject: [FWDLK] axle shaft and drum needed

Hello All,
While trying to convert the rear brakes on my '59 to the AAJ kit, I couldn't free the drum. I tried several pullers and purchased the model offered by the 300 Club. It worked well except for the passenger side drum wa frozen. It got to the point where I snapped a lug wrench in half trying to muscle it off. I didn't get hurt but that truck lug wrench will never be usabe again. I actually mushroomed the axle shaft. After that we had to torch the drum off of there and we still had trouble getting it off then! Anyways, I was wondering if any of you out there have a good passenger side axle shaft for a '59 Plymouth V8 (8-3/4") rear.. I also need an 11" rear drum to press the hub out of for the conversion. The drum itself can be past the point where it can no longer be turned. I just need the hub out of it. If any of you have these parts for sale, please contact me off list. Thanks for your time and trouble.
Take Care,
Frank
