Hello Jim,
The driver's door latch fails frequently from what I have
been told. My car was sitting in the garage when the part failed and it
took several weeks to locate the proper used part and get the old one out of the
car. I was able to access the door striker bolts by getting into the rear
seat, removing the rear inside panel and drilling out the three bolts that hold
the striker in place. Once the striker was loose the door could be
opened.
The broken part in the latch was such that there was no way to
get it to open with any tool that I could think of. I found a used latch
and installed it with good results. I was able to get the door striker
back on with new nuts on the inside of the panel. They are not contained
as the originals were which makes adjusting the striker harder to do. Get
this done before putting the inner panel back in place.
The latches are different side to side and front to back so
you need another from the same door as failed.
Good luck.
LeRoy

Subject: [FWDLK] Driver's Door will not
open... How do I get door panel off to repair?
All...
The door latch mechanism on my 1956 NYer St. Regis has failed, and I
can't open the driver's door from inside or from outside. I need to get the
door panel off to repair mechanism, but need to get door OPEN to remove panel.
Suggestions?? Ideas???
Thanks for your help.
