Another thing about harmonic balancers, if the rubber has gone hard, its effectiveness is greatly diminished. The rubber absorbs vibrations in the crank by flexing between the inner and outer rings. If it is hard, it doesn't flex. My opinion is that if it ain't broke don't fix it. But that rubber is 50 years old and has been subjected to engine compartment heat all that time. And if you are going to have it off anyway, that would be a good time to rebuild it. First, if the timing marks no longer line up when the motor is at TDC, the outer ring has slipped and the damper needs to be rebuilt. Also, if the rubber isolator is deteriorated, hanging out, etc, you'd do well to have it replaced. If you plan to red line the engine a lot, you should probably have any old balancer replaced or refurbished.
