Dan, By the "control arm" I presume are talking about the drag link which is the bar between the pitman arm and the idler arm.Whenever trying to separate a tapered joint, if there is no special tool available, a suitable object of similar size to the hammer you use like another block hammer or chunk of steel should be held against the opposite side of the "ring" so the it applies the same amount of shock to both sides simultaneously.
