I have about concluded that white gas
means the same thing as the 20 names we give the same fish, depending on where

Out here in the wild west, "white gas" was another name for
kerosene.

As it goes, gasoline was colored with a
reddish/orange color because it contained lead. Heaven forbid drinking it
without lead but nevertheless that is why Amoco premium was called white gas
early on because it had no lead and therefore no color added.

I'm not a chemist, but grew up here in
the Detroit
area. My understanding is that the term "white gas" referred to
naphtha, and was what was used as fuel in Coleman stoves.
