The cfm of the compressor will affect the filling of a second tank, when
using the system it will maintain a higher pressure and volume of air for
the time it takes your tool to drop the pressure to a point where the
compressor kicks in again then you will have the long wait for the
compressor to fill the larger capacity tank before you will have a working
pressure again. I worked at a shop that had two 120 gallon tanks filled with
one 10 horsepower electric compressor and I felt it was best to shut off the
spare tank and have the compressor cycle more often to maintain the pressure
than to have it run longer to fill both tanks after it kicked on. In that
situation it didn't make too much difference since we had a big compressor
but there were tools that we worked on that required both tanks to get the
volume it needed. The tool was an air winch like they use on ships and used
a bunch of air.

How would it affect the CFM if you plumbed in an extra holding tank to the
system. I had a boss who did this claiming that the increased volume
would
let him run tools, and his paint gun, longer. I was doubtful at the time,
thinking that it would just take longer for the compressor to fill the
larger capacity, but never researched it further. Does anyone here know?

Agreed and the maximum pressure is higher giving you more reserve in the
tank.
