You certainly are no expert ;-). The valley pans come on all big block
engines, as without them, you've got a wide open passage to your oiling
system. Perhpas you're thinking of the foil wrapped insulation packets that
were sometimes put between the pans and intakes?

WOW! A factory installed valley pan! I'm no expert but all I've ever
seen
is fiberglass insulation stuffed under the intake to keep it cool.
Maybe someone in the past 47 years removed the intake and reinstalled it
with a valley pan.
I think they're a worthwhile investment, like windage trays if you're
there.
There's also some chatter about making heat shields for fuel pumps.

Yes, that's the valley pan. You can still buy them. You need one for a B
engine, so if you go to order one your best bet is to say its for a 383
or
400 so the parts people know what you're talking about (most of them have
never heard of the 361. Imagine if you had a 350!). The valley pan seals
off
the lifter valley and was also the intake gasket. You'll notice it has a
crush zone around the ports for sealing purposes. If you want to reuse
your
pan, get some paper gaskets to put between the pan and intake. If you get
a
new pan, you can do without the paper gaskets assuming you're using iron
heads and intake.

Subject: [FWDLK] intake manifold restoration
Hi all!
Today I removed the intake manifold on my 1958 361 V-8. I wire brushed
it
clean, and later I intend to ream the ports with a nylon brush. The
ports
are black inside, but there doesn't appear to be any gunk or build-up of
any
sort. Anyway, I have a few questions to throw out there.
First, underneath the manifold and on top of the engine is a sheet of
metal
that appears to act as the gasket for the manifold. It runs from the
intake
ports on one side of the engine, forms a pan on the top of the engine,
then
runs up to the ports on the other side. It's held down by a metal strap
at
the front and rear of the engine block. Is "valley pan" the proper term
for
this part? Is there a readily available NOS replacement part for this?
If
so, who sells them? If not, is it OK to re-use the existing one?
Second, before I paint the manifold, does anyone have any words of
wisdom
that I should hear before I proceed? Such as giving it some sort of
pre-paint treatment, or anything else that I should do to it (or the
engine)
while it's off? Just looking for worldly experience from those who have
been there before!
