Start putting penetrant on the bolts that hold it in place- otherwise the straps end up ruined in many cases! Be gentle removing the float/gauge since it will break if you look cross-eyed at it! Consider putting a sloshing sealer in it while it is off. If it is heavily corroded inside have it boiled out if it will take it.
