In theory, you should be able to run it long enough to see that it will fire
and stay running, maybe 30 seconds at the most.   Last car I checked that
way never was right after that, but it was a beater that threw a rod and I
put a $100 motor in it so I could sell it for more than scrap - I didn't
bother to sort out the overheating problems it had, to try to figure out if
I caused it by running it without the cooling on it or the replacement motor
had some problem before I got it.

Seems to me that when you have air in the cooling system, that air pocket
will be higher temperature than the coolant would be, so the motor gets that
much hotter that much faster if it's all air in there.


If your engine has not been broken in since the rebuild, I would recommend
hooking up the cooling system.  Which, if you have the parts, shouldn't be
too hard even to rig up temporarily.
