So, what is the deal with this unique-sounding starter? Some people love the sound (vweee-dee-dee-dee-dee...), some hate it (especially when the engine won't start). I understand it is a reduction-gear starter, and I guess the gears are spurred (as opposed to helical gears), causing the unique sound? Then there's the unique spin-down sound, sounds like it's spinning on ball-bearings. Is there anyone on the list that can provide an engineering history on this starter - how its design compares with more "conventional" starters?
