I posted a summary of the responses I've received from some of you, trying to help with an under-hood pad for a '57 DeSoto. This is a quick followup. First of all, you needn't contact "www.cmwauto.com They have a 48 x 65 piece for 29.00 and it's the gray waffle type, 1/2 inch thick." This is not the correct material for Mopars. The generic piece they sell is as described, but too thick. Secondly, don't bother Bob Merritt. I noted that his family company used to supply it to the industry. Bob sent me the excellent explanation that "the asphalt felt insulation as used in the 50's and 60's is long gone. The only close match available today would be roofing paper, which is thinner and has less asphalt saturation..." and "The parts our company supplied years ago were made out of 1/8" thick 120% saturated asphalt felt -- it was so full of oil the stuff would drip oil on a hot day. But it was a cheap material and served the purpose of sound deadening while also being waterproof." Finally, "Over the years, the EPA required the plants that made asphalt felt to reduce their oil waste so the material has become thinner and less saturated. For a while, the only plants making this material were in Canada, but their version of the EPA eventually caused most of them to close. Plus, the auto companies don't use asphalt felt anymore, preferring the more elegant cross-linked polyethylene foams (clean, light, and odor free)." I haven't followed up on the other leads yet.
