Following the debate about coker radial look-alikes
and bias ply tires: I am really a big fan of the type of tires that were
originally used on the cars - especially on the 57 and up Mopars with the
torsion bar suspension. I have tried both radials and bias ply tires and I
would newer change back to radials, but there are som preconditions: 1) Old bias
ply tires are usually hard and really bad - they want to go down into
every hole in the road, so the tires must be new. ( I think one reason why a lot
of people are critical of bias ply tires is that the experiance comes from
driving with old, hard tires) 2) Tire pressursere must be right, which is much
less than in modern tires. I used 22 on my Dodge 57, and 24 in my 55
Chrysler. 3) The front suspension must be good. Bias ply tires seems to be more
sensitive to a worn front suspension.
I have verry good experiance with both B.F.
Goodrich Silvertown bias ply and Firestone. Only negative thing compared to
radials is that you have to take it a little slower around corners. But they
look much better than the look alikes both from the side and from the top, and
the car gets the correct height an looks much better to. With radials my 57
Dodge loolked like the rear springs had to be changed. It looked much
to low in the rear. When I put the coorect tires on, everthing looked
right.
