Dieter, I used a 1970 vintage NOS battery once that was about 14 years old. It died after 4 years. I have had new good brand batteries last only a year, and others that lasted 7 - 8 years. A friend of mine has used batteries for up to 12 years, but they need a re-charge every time to start anything. Those old tar-tops were probably only reliable for a few years when new, and it's probably 30 - 40 years old now. If properly sealed and stored, it may provide close to as-new performance. But no warranty. Unless you are building a concours level restoration show car, I would use a modern battery. Modern technology is so much better than NOS for starting power, reliability, and life expectancy. There are a couple of suppliers of reproduction batteries that look old on the outside and are modern on the inside. They can supply the exact type originally used in your car. Would be great to have just for shows even if it didn't charge up. I don't know how long a battery will last and still be good.
