Ed, When I installed factory under-the-dash courtesy light options in both my 56 Dodge and 56 Olds, the wiring harnesses already had a connector ready to plug the light wire into. No cut and splice required. The factory plans it that way so one main harness can be used for all options. You need to examine your wiring diagram in the Shop Manual to determine what color wire, with an unconnected connector, you are looking for. It has to be close to the light, within range of the wire length for the light, and have a compatible connector.
