Ed: Beyond what Roger tells you below, which I followed from advice from the List, was the liberal application of heat. After applying the tension with your puller, and loosening, but not removing the axle nut, heat the drum continually all around with a propane torch. The drum will loosen as the heat expands the drum, and it will "pop" to the axle nut, and scare you when it does. It will work, the key being the heat.

Ed,
This is a topic that comes up again and again on the List.
Perhaps there is something in the Archives..
You will get the best results from a industrial-grade hub puller...one that bolts three or more "arms" to the lugthreads and applies a cetral force at the axle end.
First loosen the axle bolt, but do not remove it, as it will prevent the hub from possibly flying off and injuring you.
Make sure the wheel turns freely...no brake shoes frozen to the drum, for example.
If you are squashing your axle threads, STOP. Figure out what you need...a better puller, some way to protect the threads..
If the drums havent been off in a while, it is always a good idea to check things out.
