Every poly valve cover I have seen has been distorted by overtightening. It isn't a good design, as you comment. However, the trick that I have found works with these is to first reshape the area around the bolt holes until they are all domed rather than depressed (close to original) and then (using rubber gaskets seems to be fine) only torque down to about 10 lb ft, as they were originally designed. Overtightening makes the leaking worse.
