A shop there knew that I was stranded and said $1800. I came back to the suburbs of Chicago and found that my trusty local shop wanted $950, and they had a towing service that would bring it back to the Chicago area (400 miles roundtrip!) for $150. Naturally, I had the local shop do the work, and I have put on another 40,000 miles with no problems. Moral: shop around, the prices differ very substantially. My friend just paid over $2500 for the trans on his 97 Bronco 4wd. I quess in the scheme of what transmission shops get for ordinary cars that is not all that excessive.
