Hey Ron, It just so happens I know that speaker well. My retail job is Radio Shack! That speaker can be set up for four ohms depending how you wire it (the speaker came with a wiring diagram), I would replace your speaker with a re-coned original if possible. Your radio will be OK as long as you don't run it for long (2+ hours) at a time. My friend's '59 new Yorker has that speaker and the amp gets warmer than it should after 2+ hours of playing. I'm not saying the radio will self-destruct but maybe over a time will wear faster and have thermal defects (amp parts getting too hot causing slow thermal break down. There is also more to it. A listmember asked me the same thing a while back and here's what I wrote.............. The trick is to use the factory speaker, not a replacement. Most folks make the simple mistake of thinking a speaker is a speaker, just match the size. The difference is the factory speaker has an impedance of 3.2 ohms while aftermarkets have 4 or 8ohm impedance. Not only is this hard on the amplifier, it diminishes ALOT of sound. I had my speaker reconed and I hooked it up today with the CD player. At 1/2-3/4 volume, I could clearly hear the song from 50 ft away! I was inside my apartment when I did this but still, for something that only puts out 1 watt of power on an average, that's impressive! Well, I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
