Scott, A small amount of play is necessary. There should be .006 to .008 inch play along the king pin axis between the vertical support and the steering knuckle. You can probably measure with feeler gages. More play and you probably have some wear at the thrust bearing. New thrust bearings should come with the king pin kit, but check to make sure. Play is adjusted with shims. I did not consider that. When I first started the project I figured that I would just change everything, make it as "new" as possible. As the expenses have been piling up I have decided to re-use whatever is not worn. The inner bushings on the upper and lower control arms are fine so they will go back in. As far as the king pins, there is a little up and down play I cant feel any side to side. Since there is really no one in my area that can look at it and say for certain whether they are good or bad, I was going to replace them just to be sure.
