My '55 DeSoto engine was silver with black accessories when I got it, and
it looked "original." I'd guess a prior owner painted yours. Are the
traces of paint green like forest or green like Chrysler blue-green?
You never know; my '42 DeSoto engine is original at 53K miles, the block is
supposed to be silver but it is definitely red-orange. Maybe that
signified steel pistons, or maybe this unit was intended for the war
effort. Gov't spec's or something like that.

don't ever believe the colors shown on the
factory sales literature. Amazing to see some of the color schemes they
showed on the cars and engines and never came anywhere close to putting on the
real cars.
Actual paint showing on the engine castings is
another story. I would expect that silver with black for the accessories
would be correct but don't know the Desoto that well. It would be
correct on a 55 Chrysler unless you have 300 and then it gets gold for the
valve covers and air cleaner assy.

Speaking of engine
color.... I have a '55 Desoto and have seen pictures of restored cars
with the engines painted silver. The factory color material I have seen
has the engines painted green with orange valve covers. My engine is
unrestored and my valve covers look like they used to be orange. The
engine has very little color left on it but there is green on the block.
Although other things, like the oil filler tube, are silver. What's the
correct color here??
