John,
I checked the 1959 parts catalogue and there were two grilles - an early
and its successor.
The early grille had part numbers 1902 602 & 1902 603, while the later
griile was1903 630 & 1903 631. The book does not say what was changed,
of course. Any idea when your cars were built? If they were
from the same plant you could compare VINs and deteremine which of yours is
early and later. The VINs quoted in the book are Canadian and the
change appears to have been in September, very early in the run.
As for your "knowledgeable" Mopar enthusiast, perhaps you could inform him
that Chryser has never had an assembly plant in Kansas City.
St.Louis, yes, but never Kansas City. Ford
Motor and General Motors have plants in KC.
Also, the St.Louis plant opened in the summer of 1959, with the start up of
the 1960 models. As the St.Louis plant replaced the Evansville
plant, no Mopar cars were built in St.Louis in model year
1959.

Subject: [FWDLK] 59 Plymouth Grille
Just wondering if anyone knows the significance of the two
different types of grilles on the 59 Plymouth. I have three (3) 59's and 2 of
them have the "shiny" grooved material and one has the grille with the dull
smooth material. I was told by a knowledgeable Mopar enthusiast that the
dull grille cars were made in Kansas City?????? but my vin # for this car
indicates it was built in Evansville and my service
manual doesn't list KC as a building site. My other 2 cars are
Detroit built. Just curious. Thanks, John Z in Mosinee,
