Re: [FWDLK] VIN search

Gary,

If you are referring to a VIN for a 1956 Plymouth, (or any pre-1958 Chrysler
product) the VIN does not break down into any type of data. The VIN would
begin at xxxxx001 at the beginning of the year and end at that number plus
how many vehicles were built. The first two digits could be used to
determine make and assembly plant, but that was about it. And even that was
no guarantee as the numbers changed over time.

For your 1956 Plymouth, for example, the VIN spans were :

P26 : 6 : Plaza, Savoy, Belvedere :
Lynch Road - 15 663 001 to 15 871 476
Evansville, IN - 22 182 001 to 22 244 749
LosAngeles - 25 180 001 to 25 200 109

P27 : V8 : Plaza, Savoy, Belvedere, Fury :
Lynch Road - 14 120 001 to 14 272 723
Evansville, IN - 20 820 001 to 20 857 927
LosAngeles - 25 202 001 to 25 212 960

These numbers also included the export DeSoto Diplomat (SP26 and SP27) and
Dodge Kingsway (D60 and D61).
The American Plymouth did not use separate serial number sequences for each
series from 1953 and on.

Canadian numbers were :

P26-1 Plaza : 95 536 401 to 95 545 250
P26-2 Savoy : 96 107 001 to 96 123 403
P26-3 Belvedere : 95 999 001 to 95 999 049

P27-1 Plaza : 95 566 501 to 95 569 750
P27-2 Savoy : 96 177 101 to 96 188 637
P27-3 Belvedere : 96 916 001 to 96 921 570

These numbers included the export DeSoto Diplomat (SP26 and SP27) but NOT
the export Dodge Kingsway or the Canadian-market Dodge
Crusader/Regent/Mayfair series. The Plymouth Fury (and all convertibles)
were not built in Canada. The Belvedere six was actually the export
Plymouth Belvedere six and DeSoto Diplomat Custom six sedan.

If you want to figure out how many cars were built at each factory, subtract
the beginning number from the ending number and add one. The numbers were
inclusive, which is to say the first car had number 96 916 001 and the last
car had number 96 921 570, for a total of 5,570 Belvedere V8 models built in
Canada.

There is no way to determine what engine the car had, what body style it
was, or what series just by identifying a number in the VIN.
