here is the final update on the front end rebuild in my 56 Savoy. Everything went back together well last week and the sawy bar bushings are in and on. Thanks to the person who responded to my bushing question with the one line Grease is the word ! The whole time I was doing the second bushing and putting the swayabar on the car, I couldn't stop singing that song. Anyway, disassembly and cleaning was the absolute messiest thing I've had to do to a car. I had a couple of problems in the reassembly. For the first one, I wasn't sure, so I called out the BIG GUNS. Dad came over. He was a mechanic back then, had his own garage and later was a head dealer mechanic for Rambler in the 60's Anyway, the service manual told me to use some kind of alignment tool to align the shaft in the control arm. Anyway I wasn't sure what they were talkiing about. Dad told me to just get the shaft centered in the arm and make sure that the control arm doesn't squeeze when tightening the bushings. For some reason, I couldn't get a new bushing to thread all wht way into the front of the passenger control arm. I was using a 1/2 ratchet and 2 foot bar on the end and it wouldn't go. The old bushing looked ok, so I just reused it. all other bushings when it fine. On the passenger side of the car, I didn't have the lower shaft centered correctly, so when I went to put the steering knuckle in, it didn't line up between the two control arms. All I had to do was take it back out and spin the shaft a couple times, then put it all back together. I drove the car, It drives a million times better than it used to. The new parts and new radials make it track very well. It's not 100% yet because my steering box is shot. It has alot of play and high spots in it. But I'll be fixing that soon with the power steering conversoin. Thanks everyone for you help with my questions.
