To tell the truth, when we wired my friend's 38 Plymouth last week, we
just:
  1) hooked up the left turn signal to one connection at the socket
  2) powered up the car
  3) turned on the left signal
  4) observed which filament was on
  5) if the wrong filament, switch the wire to the other connection
  6) the remaining connection is the tail light
  7) repeat for right side of car
We got lucky on both sides...guessed correctly each time.
