Ian, The mirror would definitely have to be removed from the housing in order to rechrome the glass. It would also have to be cleaned (old chrome removed) and may in fact not be chrome but could be a stainless steel coating or other alloy to provide the needed darkening to control glare. Outside mirrors are also 1st surface coated, unlike the inside mirror which is typically silver coated on the second surface, and always on the second surface for prismatic (day-nite) mirrors. You would be ahead of the curve by removing the mirror glass from the housing and then having a new mirror cut to fit. Contact one of the glass suppliers to the auto industry such as Donnelly Mirrors in Ireland or in Holland, Michigan, USA. Also PPG and LOF can provide new mirror glass as well as others in Europe.
