Definetly change the valve guides, if you're going to rebuild your 230, do it all the first time. You can't change the valve guides later in a L head without tearing down the motor, the OHV folks got an advantage on us there.Just make sure the person who puts in the guides knows what they are doing. If the valve guide is misaligned, you can end up sinking the valve into the deck, or head on a later model. Measure the sides of the valve stems for wear also, for the same reason. Also, check the synchronizer on 2nd gear, that is the one that gets raked the most on a bad shift, after over 40 years it's hard to say how many time the gears have been ground together,lol! Probably will need to change the bearings as well, a worn bearing can cause a bad shift also. Change the seals too, and the transmission should be in fine shape then. Definetly sounds like a plan, you should be cruising in fine 50's finned Mopar style very soon. > > > > >
