Re: [FWDLK] Power steering in a 56

According to my '55-'56 parts list...

All '55 pumps are the same (p/n 1615292), and all '56 pumps are the same
(p/n 1672697).

Generators that interface with the power steering pump vary depending on the
vehicle model...('55 New Yorker = C68; '56 Chrysler = C7x; '56 Plymouth I6 =
P28; '56 Plymouth V8 = P29). Although some vehicles may share the same
generator part number, the generators may be stamped uniquely as a function
of the pulley type (diameter and/or number of grooves). Listed below are
the generator part numbers and what models in which they were used.

1604825 6V, 45-amp P26,P27,D55,D56,C67,C68,S21,S22
1604834 6V, 50-amp C69
1604843 6V, 55-amp C67,C68,C69,S21,S22
1642005 12V, 30-amp P28,P29,D62,D63,C70,C71,C72,C73,S23,S24
1658865 12V, 40-amp C70,C71,C72,S23,S24

As for the steering gear and such, that's 7 pages of part number charts (are
you doing a complete conversion, or just maintaining an already-existing
system?).

The steering gear housing is the same for '55-'56 Plymouth and Dodge (p/n
1610982), and '55-'56 DeSoto and Chrysler use p/n 1558259.

IN SHORT....the pump from the '56 Chrysler is the same as that used for '56
Plymouth. As for '55 Chrysler to '56 Plymouth, the part numbers are
different, but I don't know why they're different (flow curve, valving,
interface, etc.?). And it appears that the steering box may not be
interchangeable between a Chrysler and a Plymouth, but perhaps someone with
direct experience can state otherwise?

Subject: [FWDLK] Power steering in a 56

Anyone have an interchange manual handy, I've still been unable to loacte
mine since I moved and packed it away somewhere. I have a 56 Chrysler
generator/power steering pump on the way to my house. I bough it hoping it
would be the same as a 56 Plymouth. Now I have a chance for a power steering
box out of a 55 New Yorker. Anyone know if these parts will fit the 56
Plymouth, or what cars I can get them out of.

Thanks,
Nick
