The surface texture of a cast engine is quite porous. It may be difficult to blast all the way into the pores and pits of the casting. Another alternative is chemical rust removal, like what is used on body panels. The advantage of this process is removal of the rust inside the water passages. I have asked one of these shops this question before. They usually charge a few hundred bucks for a complete and disassembled engine. I understand crushed walnut shells are excellent for motor work, as they will degrade very easily in motor oil and be flushed away without damage. I believe Eastwood sells them for this purpose. However, I haven't had any experience with them personally. -Dave |
