My 57 Fury has only let me down, stranded, twice in 14 years, so I have two possible solutions... Once the distributor cap had a hair line crack, the length of the cap. Now this was a brand new cap from Atlas, and had not been dropped. The car would go like a dream, for months, and then just stop during a long journey. All attempts to restart proved fruitless, until the crack was discovered and the cap replaced. The other time, was also on a long journey to a swap meet down the line, where the Fury would be running once again like a dream. All of a sudden it would start to miss and cough, and run on 6 cylinders and then 8, and then come right for the next 50 miles. Eventually when it did die, it would not restart, and it took a long time to discover that the problem was a little braided wire (high tension?), inside the distributor, that delivered the current from one set of points to the next, had lost it's insulation in a tiny area and was arcing (grounding) against the steel base plate of the distributor. Replaced it and it hasn't done it since. Just my two theories worth. Glenn.
